PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a picture display device capable of performing coding/ decoding processing quickly for effectively utilizing a video memory. SOLUTION: This picture display device is provided with a line buffer 101 for dividing binary picture data by every fixed length data, pattern comparators 201 to 294 for comparing and processing pattern coincidence of individual fixed length data in parallel, a run length discriminator 301 to which the results of the comparing processing are inputted, a code converter 302 to which code selection signals being the outputs of the run length discriminator 301 are inputted, and a video memory 303 to which the picture data whose codes are converted are inputted.
