PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detent mechanism of a valve lifter free from the impairing of the circularity of an outer peripheral face of a valve lifter of an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: A pair of valve lifters 20a are connected by fitting an engagement part 36a of a detent member 36 to engagement holes 20e of the valve lifters 20a. As the detent member 36 is slidably mounted on an accommodating groove 34 formed on a cylinder head 14, the valve lifters 20a can be reciprocated in the axial direction of lifter bores 20b without rotated in the lifter bores 20b. Whereby the impairing of the circularity of the outer peripheral faces 20d of the valve lifters 20a in accompany with the mounting of the detent member 36 can be prevented.
