PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve an operating method and a device for an internal combustion engine, in particular gasoline direct injection internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: This method for operating the internal combustion engine in at least two operating systems and the device thereof select one operating system, and this operating system is allowed only when a required torque of the internal combustion engine can be formed while maintaining a limit of an air/fuel ratio for this operating system. In this case, the maximum output torque at the limit of the air/fuel ratio in this operating system is determined, and is compared with the required torque. When the required torque exceeds the maximum output torque, an enabling signal for this operating system is reset. In the case of a required high torque, if it maintains at least the position below the limitλ, a target torque to be actually set in this operating condition is used as a steady desired torque.
