PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an optically active 3- benzhydrylamino-4,5-dihydroxy-1-cyclohexene-1-carboxylic acid ester capable of efficiently obtaining a (3S,4R,5S)-3-benzhydrylamino-4,5-dihydroxy-1- cyclohexene-1-carboxylic acid ester useful as a synthetic intermediate for GS4104 in which the development thereof as an anti-influenza agent has been promoted. SOLUTION: Diastereomer salts (III) of an r-3-benzhydrylamino-t-4,t-5- dihydroxy-1-cyclohexene-1-carboxylic acid ester (I) with an optically active mandelic acid derivative (II) are formed and either of the diastereomer salts is separated and reacted with a base in the presence of water to afford an optically active substance (I-1) or (I-2).
