PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a line thermal printer having a driving mechanism that seldom generates an impact when a ribbon saving operation is executed. SOLUTION: When a line thermal head 24 attached to a head arm 18 is in a first position where the line thermal head 24 is close to a platen, the line thermal head 24 is moved to a printing position or a shunting position by the operation of a cam 36. When the line thermal head 24 is in the shunting position, only a recording paper 3 is conveyed and the ribbon saving operation is executed.
