PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image recorder employing a line thermal head in which the recording mode can be switched without requiring the mounting/removing operation of an ink ribbon cartridge and a thermal recording sheet by an operator, and a facsimile unit in which the recording mode can be switched depending on the detection results of the source facsimile. SOLUTION: The image recorder 21 comprises a line thermal head 22, a thermal transfer platen 26 and a thermal platen 28. Switching is made between a thermal transfer recording mode and a thermal recording mode by making a switch between the thermal transfer platen 26 and the thermal platen 28. The facsimile unit 101 comprises the image recorder 21, a control means, means for detecting the source and a storage means. The means for detecting the source detects the telephone number of the source of a facsimile and a facsimile can be recorded in a recording mode corresponding to the source prestored in the storage means.
