PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust gas recirculating device of an engine capable of suppressing the occurrence of black smoke or white smoke during an accelerating operation and even after that operation when the operation is entered into the accelerating operation at a low temperature. SOLUTION: This exhaust gas recirculating device of the diesel engine comprises an exhaust gas recirculating passage for communicating the suction passage with the exhaust passage of the engine, an exhaust gas recirculating amount regulating valve for regulating the recirculating amount of exhaust gas, and a controller for controlling the opening of the exhaust gas recirculating amount regulating valve. The controller judges based on the amount of variation in engine load detected by an engine load detection means whether the engine is in the accelerating operation or not. When the controller judges that the engine is in the accelerating operation, the controller closes the exhaust gas recirculating amount regulating valve to stop the recirculation of the exhaust gas, determines an exhaust gas recirculation halt time based on an engine temperature detected by an engine temperature detection means and, until an exhaust gas recirculation halt time is elapsed, closes the exhaust gas recirculating amount regulating valve to maintain the stop state of the exhaust gas recirculation.
