In a process for the catalytic high pressure reforming of petroleum hydrocarbons with steam, the reaction mixture is passed first over a nickel catalyst on a support of a silicate of one or more of Al, alkali metal, alkaline earth metal (to convert the feed to CO2 and CH4), and then over a different catalyst having a volume 1 to 4 times that of the first (to react the CH4 with excess steam and CO2). The second catalyst is conventional, and optional components in the first are Co, Fe, Pt group metals, and oxides of alkali and alkaline earth metals. Both catalysts may be located in tubes, or the primary-reactor may comprise a single vessel, the second a bundle of tubes. Further, two primary reactors may be connected in parallel and used alternately, e.g. to permit catalyst regeneration where undesulphurized or unvaporizable hydrocarbons are used. The reaction mixture may be preheated. Four specific examples are described. |
