Process for adjusting the throat width of a segment of a supporting roll stand comprises acquiring the actual thickness of the product before guiding into the segment; comparing with a theoretical value; adjusting each roll from a zero position; and returning to the zero position. An Independent claim is also included for a device for carrying out the process comprising a bearing element and a bearing housing (4, 5, 5', 6) fixed to a bearing block (7, 7',8 , 8'). A spring element is arranged on each bearing. Preferred Features: The spring element is a pressure pad (9', 9'') made of two parallel plates with a compensation element arranged between them.
