PURPOSE: A method of operating a buffer for voice packet processing in an ATM switching system is provided to store assignment information on an unavailable cell buffer in a free buffer, and to receive the unavailable cell buffer corresponding to the stored assignment information when a voice packet for assigning a new cell buffer is received, then to process the voice packet, so as to make the buffer available. CONSTITUTION: An SSCS(Service-Specific Convergence Sublayer) interface analyzes a VC(Virtual Connection) index included in a received voice packet(S31), and confirms whether a new cell buffer has to be assigned(S32). If so, the SSCS interface reads cell buffer assignment information stored in an area indicated by a free buffer start pointer, and changes a corresponding VC buffer value(S33). The SSCS interface increases the free buffer start pointer by 1(S34), and reads cell buffer assignment information stored in a VC buffer to transmit the information to a CPS(Common Part Sublayer) processor. The CPS processor stores a voice packet in a cell buffer corresponding to the assignment information(S35). The SSCS interface confirms whether the presently-used cell buffer is returned(S36). If so, the SSCS interface records cell buffer assignment information corresponding to the returned cell buffer(S37), and increases a corresponding free buffer end pointer by 1(S38). If the new cell buffer is not assigned in the step "S32", the SSCS interface reads a VC buffer value stored in a VC buffer to transmit the value to the CPS processor. The CPS processor stores a voice packet in a cell buffer corresponding to the value(S39). |
