The present invention provides an electro-optical liquid crystal display, in particular an STN (<B>S</B>uper <B>T</B>wisted <B>N</B>ematic) display with low addressing voltage, which uses organic alignment layers of low layer thickness. The display includes a liquid crystal layer between two substrates, and alignment layers with a thickness in the range 3 nm to 150 nm situated on the insides of the substrates. The liquid crystal layer has a twist angle in the range of 110{ to 360{ and a surface tilt angle in the range of 2{ to 20{. The liquid crystal media has high dielectric anisotropy and a relatively broad operating and storage temperature range. |
