PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fabric retaining apparatus driven by a linearly moving electric motor, which can be stored in a machine casing at least in a wide range thereof together with the linearly moving electric motor, and is operated with small wear thereof. SOLUTION: There is provided a sewing machine which is provided with the fabric retaining apparatus consisting of a fabric retaining rod (4) and a fabric retaining foot (5), and the linearly moving electric motor (20) as an adjusting element. In the sewing machine, the linearly moving electric motor (20) is arranged at least partially in an arm (2) of the machine casing. Then, a driving rod (19) of the linearly moving electric motor (20) is connected via an angle lever (14) to a spring holder (7) for housing a spring (9), and the holder is further connected to the fabric retaining rod (4).
