PURPOSE: An error protection method and apparatus in a video CODEC are provided to adaptively select an error protection method in consideration of significance of information of video bit streams. CONSTITUTION: Video data is classified into synchronization information, header information and picture data. The video data is formed into bit streams with the synchronization information having the highest error protection class, the header information having medium error protection class, and the picture data having the lowest error protection class. The synchronization information is required for synchronizing pictures, group of blocks and macroblocks.
