PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To record/reproduce an image whose aspect ratio is significantly different from an ordinary one. SOLUTION: A wanted image information is cut out, as shown in B, from an image signal, shown in A, and then reduced as shown in C. The reduced image information is split into two images, left and right, thus separated to an odd field and an even field. As shown in D, frames are sequentially formed from the fields of the left image and the right image. Further, the image signal is encoded into such signal as shown in E by an MPEG2. At reproduction, the MPEG2 decodes and left and right images are connected for each decoded frame as shown in D, forming an image as shown in F, which is further magnified to form an image as shown in G. An image information at an arbitrary position of the image is cut out, and the regenerative signal in a standard television method is formed from the image information, displaying a reproduced image shown in H.
