PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus and method that allow forming a high-quality image with a low storage capacity. SOLUTION: After a copying operation is started, connection of a unit 704 for a high image quality mode is confirmed based on a connection sensing signal 711 (S801). When it is determined as being connected, it is determined whether a high image quality mode is selected or not (S601). When it is determined that the high image quality mode is selected, a conversion table is set for a high image quality (S602) with an image memory being set to inactive (step S603) and a selector signal being switched for the high image quality (S604). When the decision in step S801 or step S601 is negative, it is determined whether a normal image quality mode is selected or not (S606). When the normal image mode is selected, the conversion table is set for the normal image quality (S607) with an image memory being set in a prescribed manner (S608) and the selector signal being switched for the normal image quality (S609). After that, each prescribed display is executed (S605, S610) and preparation for copying is completed.
