The reed consists of a tube of circular section, enlarged to form a cup shape at one end (8), with two vibrating strips attached to it with a gap between them. The strips are fastened to the tube by two brass rings, covered by a glued and wound textile thread (11) round their lower ends, and a second layer of thread covering the first but not glued to it. The ends of the strips are rounded and have chamfered edges.
