PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform proper flicker correction by solving the problem that while a fluorescent light blinks at 100 Hz and the field rate of an image pickup device is 60 Hz, the luminance level repeats regular fluctuation in a cycle for 1/20 seconds (3 fields) being the least common multiple of 1/100 seconds and 1/60 seconds. SOLUTION: The total three fields of 6 fields as one unit are sampled intermittently(every other field). Then, the sampled value of the third field is replaced with the sampled value of the second field. As the result, the luminance values are compared in the order of the first sampled value, the third sampled value, and the second sampled value, and the presence or absence of any flicker is judged from the periodic fluctuation. Then, the flicker is detected so that diaphragm or the like can be controlled.
