PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve problems that, when a magnetic super-high resolution medium with unknown recording and reproducing characteristics is put in a drive, a complicated operation and a lot of time are required for the purpose of deciding the optimum recording/reproducing laser power; that, even if recording/ reproducing conditions are determined after the complicated operation or the like, an excessive laser power is generally fed in the medium with the aim of sure recording regardless of the characteristics of the medium; and that, when the routine is repeated for determining these recording/reproducing conditions, deterioration of the medium is a matter of concern. SOLUTION: The invention provides a method of determining, in a short time, the optimum reproducing conditions for a magnetic super-high resolution medium of unknown recording/reproducing characteristics. To be concrete only an external reproducing magnetic field is impressed before the recording operation and, by using a reproducing signal in this state, the optimum reproducing power is decided.
