PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively control the magnetization direction in the center part of a track and to realize satisfactory reproduction characteristics, in a magnetoresistive head especially having wide read out width. SOLUTION: A soft magnetic bias gap layer 5, a soft magnetic bias layer 6, a separation layer 7, magneto-resistance effect layer 8 and a magneto- resistance effect gap layer are provided with a step part 1b formed in the track width direction of a MR element 1.
