Measurement of the viscoelastic properties of pressure-sensitive adhesives comprises: (1) subjecting a sample of the adhesive to a constant shear stress; and (2) determining the shear produced over time. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) an apparatus for carrying out the process comprising two plates between which the sample is mounted, one of the plates being fixed and the other subjected to a constant tangential force, and the shear deformation angle ( psi ), or a parameter from which it can be calculated, then being measured; and (b) an apparatus for carrying out the process comprising a plate and a woven or non-woven textile, metal foil or plastic film, between which the sample is placed, the plate being fixed and the other component subjected to a constant tangential force and the shear deformation angle measured as before.
