An adapter module (14) for a personal digital assistant (PDA) (2) and a method for using the same are provided. The adapter module (14) includes a processing sub-system enclosed by a housing, and a first and second connector (22,24) coupled to the processor (90). The first connector (22) electrically connects to a corresponding connector (50) on the PDA (2). This allows for communication between the adapter module (14) and PDA (2). The second connector (24) electrically connects to a corresponding connector (58) on a PDA dock (54). This allows for communication between the adapter module (14) and the PDA dock (54). The adapter module (14) may be mechanically and electrically coupled to the PDA (2) while the PDA (2) is docked in the PDA (2) dock (54).
