Two independently operating pedals apply a tangential turning force to cranks H. Each pedal lever is linked via a sliding pin F in slot G to a perforated bar D (and E) that replaces a conventional chain. The cranks are semi-circular half cranks and are attached to a common spindle via ratchets. A fixed crank (I, figure 5) is located between the half cranks. The fixed crank may apply drive directly or indirectly to a wheel or shaft. Each pedal is free to begin a downward stroke before the other pedal has completed its stroke to enable maximum leverage to be imparted to the fixed crank I. Alternatively, both pedals may be operated simultaneously. The pedals do not completely rotate and allow a longer pedal lever to be used for more leverage. The system may be used for land, air, or water borne vehicles. |
