A rapid, quantitative assay for detection of an immune response factor to a preselected micro-organism (especially a virus such as HIV), produced by an in vitro cell culture exposed to said microorganism, comprises detection of the suppression of replication of said microorganism. The cell line used in the assay may produce a reporter analyte, such as an enzyme (particularly b -galactosidase) or a nucleic acid, indicative of such suppression and the immune response factor detected may be a cytokine, chemokine, antibody or, particularly, a CD8+ cell antiviral factor (CAF). |
