PURPOSE: A multi-format active matrix display is provided to reduce power consumption by only operating on elements corresponding to a given format. CONSTITUTION: A multi-format sampling register for a data driver(50) is for driving data lines of an active matrix display. The sampling register is arranged to operate in either high, or low resolution modes. The sampling register comprises a sampler input unit arranged to receive a digital input containing at least(n+m) bits and representing the switching level of a pixel of the display, where n and m are integers, a first sampler comprising m sampling circuits, each arranged to sample one of m bits of the digital input, a second sampler comprising n sampling circuits, each arranged to sample one of n bits of the digital input, wherein the m bits are more significant than the n bits, and a second sampler switch arranged to switch the second sampler on in the high resolution mode and off in the low resolution mode. The second sampler consumes substantially no, or at least less, power when the sampling register operates in the low resolution mode.
