PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide automatic focusing device and method by which high-speed and accurate focusing is performed even when a plurality of objects having a different distance exist. SOLUTION: This device performs AF search action to obtain an evaluated value in accordance with a contrast component from an image signal obtained from a CCD for every position by moving a focus lens with the half-depressing operation of a shutter button. After detecting the maximum value (peak) of the evaluated value, the evaluated value at a lens position separate from the peak position by a fixed amount or more is compared with a specified threshold. When the evaluated value is larger than the threshold, it is judged as a situation that the plurality of the objects exist, and the acquiring action (AF search) of the evaluated value is continued, and when the evaluated value at the lens position separate from the peak position by the fixed amount is equal to or smaller than the threshold, it is judged as a situation that the subjects do not exist ahead, and high-speed AF processing is realized by interrupting the AF search at this time. |
