PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide automatic focusing device and method by which high-speed focusing processing is realized by deciding a lens driving direction at the time of focusing in accordance with photographing circumstances. SOLUTION: This device performs AF search action to obtain an evaluated value in accordance with a contrast component from an image signal obtained from a CCD 52 for every position by moving a focus lens 48 with the half- depressing operation of a shutter button 18. At this time, a focus position and a zoom position at the time of starting AF action are detected. When the present focus position is on a short distance side in a focusing area, a search direction is decided on a direction where the lens goes toward infinity from a close range, and when the present focus position is on a long distance side, it is decided on a direction where it goes toward the close range from the infinity. When the present zoom position is on a wide side, the search direction is decided on the direction where the lens goes toward the infinity from the close range and when the present zoom position is on a telephoto side, it is decided on the direction where it goes toward the close range from the infinity. |
