PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To numerically provide indices based on the intrinsic size and shape of the roots of a plant by removing an effect of ground specific resistivity from the grounding resistance of the roots. SOLUTION: By a conventional method, the grounding resistance of the plant/tree 10 is measured from current I and VEP by using auxiliary electrodes C and P installed in the ground and electrodes T and E mounted on the tree 10. Then, the grounding resistance of the electrode C is measured from the current I and VPC. Equivalent radii in terms of the radii of a hemispherical electrode and a disc-shaped electrode, having the same grounding resistance as the roots, can be found from the two values of the grounding resistance and the radius 'a' and embedded length 'b' of the rod-shaped electrode C. Also, an equivalent length can be known, in terms of the embedded length of a rod-shaped electrode having an appropriately fixed radius L. These values found in this way serve as indices numerically providing information on the intrinsic size and shape of the roots of the plant with an effect of the ground resistivity removed from the grounding resistance of the roots.
