A lever for operating a hoist including a distal end with an opening to receive a ratchet assembly, a proximal end having a grip portion, a midsection spannin g between the distal and proximal ends, a ratchet rod adapted to allow operation of the ratchet assembly, and a trigger attached to the ratchet rod to allow actuation of the ratchet rod. The midsection has a rod receiving compartment and a trigger compartment toward its proximal end, the trigger compartment being open toward an outer plane of th e midsection facing away from the hoist and the chain. The ratchet rod is partially positioned within the rod receiving compartment and extends between the trigger compartment and th e opening. The ratchet rod is axially displaceably and rotatably mounted in the lever a nd is actuable via the trigger, the trigger being positioned proximate to the grip portion of the lever. The trigger extends outwardly beyond the outer plane when the trigger is transversely pivoted thereby allowing the user to transversely pivot the trigger with one hand. This orientation of the trigger minimizes the likelihood of the chain or cable of the hoist becoming caught on the trigger.
