PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an excellent liquid crystal compound having a low threshold voltage, stable to light, heat or the like, good in compatibility with other liquid crystal components, and useful as a component for an antiferroelectric liquid crystal composition, and further to provide the antiferroelectric liquid crystal composition having small spontaneous polarization at room temperature and exhibiting fast response, and a liquid crystal display element capable of displaying gradation by using the composition. SOLUTION: This optically active fluorine-substituted biphenyl derivative is represented by formula (1), wherein, R1 is a 2-20C alkyl, alkanoyloxy or alkoxy; R2 is a 3-15C linear alkyl; R3 is methyl, trifluoromethyl or ethyl; X and Y are each H or F with the proviso that both of X and Y are not simultaneously H; and (*) represents an asymmetric carbon. The liquid crystal composition contains the compound, and the liquid crystal display element is obtained by using the composition. The liquid crystal element using the composition shows a V-shape characteristic good in electrooptic responsive wave shape within a wide temperature range including room temperature, and can provide the gradation by the change in voltage.
