A mandrill immunodeficiency virus SIM27, comprising RNA complementary to one of 6 fully defined DNA sequences as given in the specification, is new. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) variants of SIM27, comprising RNA complementary to DNA that has been identified by: (a) extracting a defined set of simian and human immunodeficiency virus genomic sequences from the Genbank data bank; (b) reading the sequences into the ClustalW version 1.74 computer program; (c) using the program to perform multiple alignments of the sequences and phylogenetic analysis of the resulting data by the neighbor joining method; (d) visualizing the data as a phylogenetic tree; and (e) selecting variants falling between SIM27 and the point where the SIM27 branch joins the rest of the tree; and (2) Gag, Env and Pol proteins of SIM27 and its variants.
