PURPOSE: An in-plane switching mode liquid crystal display is provided to determine the overlapping position between common electrodes and data electrodes considering the rubbing direction for rounding the edge portions of the common and data electrodes in the same direction with the rubbing, thereby preventing the generation of the disclination and improving the luminance. CONSTITUTION: An in-plane switching mode liquid crystal display includes data electrodes(37) formed with a predetermined distance from common electrodes(35) formed in pixel areas defined by data lines(33) and gate lines(31) are overlapped at edge portions(B,D,E,G) inside the common electrodes, so that the electric field generation direction between the data electrodes and the common electrodes is equalized to the rubbing direction, wherein the edge portions(A,C,F,H) of the data electrodes are overlapped outside the common electrodes if the rubbing direction is changed symmetrically with respect to a first direction and the common electrodes are formed on a same plate with the same material with the gate lines.
