The motor cycle helmet has latches (12) pivoted on each side the ends (9) of a chin strap are attached by a pivot (14) to each latch. The axis of the pivot corresponds with the axis of a toothed wheel (13). A spring (20) biases the end of a catch (17) into engagement with the teeth of the wheel. The chin strap can be released manually by pressing on the opposite end (21) of the catch.
