The interferometer device includes a device (111) for splitting a beam from a source (13b) into two. A beam guide (103,105) directs the superimposed beams onto two partially reflective structures (3b,5b). The first structure (3b) is constituted by the beam guide. Independent claims are also included for: (a) a method of determining the distance of a partially reflecting structure from a reference surface; (b) an eye surgery method; (c) a method of manufacturing a body with a defined surface.
