Use of a diboride coated pressing plate to laminate a metallic layer onto a resin impregnated laminate

A method of making a durable laminate, comprises: a) assembling a stack comprising at least one resin impregnated layer; b) positioning a press plate adjacent to the at least one resin impregnated layer with a surface of the press plate in contact with a first surface of the at least one resin impregnated layer wherein the surface of the pressing plate has been coated with a second substance; and c) applying the surface of the press plate coated with the second substance to the first surface of the resin impregnated layer. The resin impregnated layer of part a) is provided with an amount of a first substance, such as alumina particles having the size of 35 microns, adapted to at least in part provide the desired durable characteristic to the laminate. The second substance of part b) is adapted to provide enhanced resistance to degradation of the press plate due to interfacing with the first substance. The second substance such as titanium diboride has been further adapted not to transfer an undesirable color to the resin impregnated layer when the surface of the press plate engages the first surface of the at least one resin impregnated layer.
