SOLUTION: A driving mechanism or the driving method is characterized in that it includes a step for providing a cholesteric liquid crystal arrayed between spaced transparent substrates and a step for providing a reset pulse and plural selection pulses to provide a resultant driving waveform and consists of a reset phase and a selection phase and the latter pulse is provided with freedom in the plural selection pulses. The mechanism provides gray scale ability and improved optionally selective action. Inversions of the waveform are used.
