PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steel wire which can be drawn without impairing the surface quality of the drawn steel wire or the service life of a die even when descaling before the drawing is omitted by controlling the properties of scales adhered to the wire surface and to provide a method for drawing the steel wire. SOLUTION: The means scale adhesion of the steel wire is set to be <=0.3% in terms of the weight ratio to the steel wire and the mean peeling ratio of scales adhered to the steel wire is set to be <=40% in terms of the weight ratio of the scales peeled by giving the tensile strain of 6% to the steel wire to the scales originally adhered to the steel wire to obtain the steel wire where descaling before drawing can be omitted.
