The method involves using a mask (10) with which part (11) of the surface structure can be covered to which no paint or similar is to be applied. The mask encloses a contactless and closely adjacent area of the flat structure and the mask and paint (16) are electrically charged with the same polarity from a d.c. source during application of the paint to the areas bounded by the mask.
