Use of perfluoroalkylated metal complexes (I), having a critical micelle formation concentration of less than 1 mM, a hydrodynamic micelle diameter of more than 1 nm and a proton relaxivity in plasma of more than 10 l/mmol.s is claimed as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent for visualization of e.g. plaque, lymph nodes or infarcted and necrotic tissue. The use of perfluoroalkylated metal complexes (I), having a critical micelle formation concentration of less than 1 (preferably less than 0.1) mM, a hydrodynamic micelle diameter ( 2 Rh) of more than 1 (preferably more than 4) nm and a proton relaxivity in plasma (R 1>) of more than 10 (preferably more than 15) l/mmol.s is claimed as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent for visualization of plaque, lymph nodes or infarcted and necrotic tissue or for independent visualization of necrosis and tumors.
