PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify the constitution of a coil outer diameter detecting device and to improve efficiency in coil transferring work by shortening the measuring time of various coil sizes. SOLUTION: The coil outer diameter detecting device 1 applied for a coil transferring device 50 for rolling facilities is provided with a distance measuring unit 2 arranged on the side of a transfer path 50a and a control device 10 to perform arithmetic processing. The distance measuring unit 2 transmits measuring light L to a coil C mounted to a coil transferring carriage 51, receives the reflected component of the transmitted measuring light L, and measures the distance to the coil C. The control device 10 computes the outer diameter D of the coil C on the basis of the measured values of the distance measuring unit 2.
