The channel defined by the knife and its holder has a diverging cross-section, the widest point of the channel being at the drum periphery. The channel radius is adaptable to the type of wood being chipped. - Knives are mounted in holders around the periphery of a drum or rotor supported on a stand. The knives are located at a given distance from the centre of the drum and cooperate with a counter-piece in the stand. The knife and holder define a channel which starts at the tip of the knife and extends towards the centre of the drum before curving outwards towards the drum periphery, the channel mouth being positioned after the tip of the knife with respect to the drum rotation direction.
