PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat insulating material for covering molten metal, having good heat retaining property without deteriorating the working environment, and its producing method with which a large quantity of this material can be supplied without increasing the cost burden. SOLUTION: The heat insulating material for covering the molten metal is constituted by composing a carburized fibrous material, in which organic natural fibrous raw material is imperfectly carburized so as to leave the fibrous form. This heat insulating material for covering the molten metal, can be obtained by applying a wet-heat treatment at >=120 deg.C to the organic natural fibrous raw material and imperfectly carburizing so as to leave the fibrous form.
