PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a quartz-base optical fiber excellent in radiation resistance and high energy resistance in the UV region, particularly a shorter-wavelength UV region and in the X-ray region. SOLUTION: When a quartz-base optical fiber is manufactured by disposing a cladding layer on a quartz glass core, elemental C is incorporated into the quartz glass core, and the total content of elements belonging to the third to seventh periods of the Periodic Table except elemental Si constituting the quartz structure in the quartz glass core is adjusted to <=100 ppm.
