The invention relates to pipe handling apparatus for laying elongate articles, such as pipes (16) in deep waters. The apparatus includes a tiltable pipe handling structure (22) housing a travelling clamp (26) for holding and/or paying out under tension the elongate article and a fixed clamp (28). The travelling clamp is driven via an articulated rack (202, 204) located by guide means (22). The rack is driven by pinion drive means (200) located and acts at a lower portion of the rack (202), such that the center of gravity of the apparatus is lowered, and loading in the structure (22) is reduced.
