<p>A method for forming a liquid crystal alignment layer on the surface of a trench formed in an optical path of a planar optical device includes steps of depositing a layer of an alignment chemical on a surface of the trench, and bombarding the alignment chemical with a particle beam to form a liquid crystal alignment layer. The method is useful for fabricating planar optical devices having liquid crystal switching components.</p> |
