Nucleic acid (I) that encodes a plant or animal transporter (II) of the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM), is new. New nucleic acid (I) that encodes a plant or animal transporter (II) is: (i) a sequence selected from a gene bank from its ability to complement a MCF (mitochondrial carrier family) defect, or its fragment; (ii) sequences (S1) or (S3), of 891 and 930 base pairs, respectively, given in the specification, or their fragments; (iii) sequences that encode proteins (S2) or (S4), of 296 and 309 amino acids, respectively, given in the specification, or their fragments; (iv) complements of (i) - (iii), or their fragments; (v) derivatives of (i) - (iv) with substitution, addition, inversion and/or deletion of at least one base; and (vi) equivalents of (i) - (v) within the degeneracy of the genetic code. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) fragments (Ia) of (I) that, when expressed in the antisense orientation, inhibit a plant MCF member; (2) a construct containing (I) or (Ia), under control of expression-regulating elements; (3) a host cell containing (I), (Ia) or the construct of (2); (4) transgenic plants containing (I), (Ia) or the construct of (2); (5) protein (II) produced by expressing (I) in the cells of (3); (6) antibodies that react with (II); (7) preparation of transgenic plants by incorporation of (I); (8) altering metabolite contents of plants by incorporating (I) or the construct of (2); and (9) isolating a gene that encodes (II).
