<p>A method is described for observing and determining the position of targets in geographical areas, in particular for monitoring wild animals, for surveillance against poaching, for environmental monitoring against discharge of pollutants into rivers and for surveillance in general of protected areas. An infrared camera (2) is provided for dectecting heat radiation (3), capable of being oriented in angular directions in a self driven way for shooting sighted targets and to obtain infrared images thereof. The location in a geographical area of the infrared camera (2), that is preferably on board of self propelled means, is known or its coordinates are determined automatically. Means are provided of directing (4,5) the infrared camera (2) up to a target to shoot, recording (8) the image of the target, evaluating the distance of said target from the camera, reading (6) the angular position, computing the topographic coordinates of said target with respect to the camera, allocating said angular position and/or said coordinates on data storing means (10), associating each recorded image to a corresponding set of position data, and finally classifying the recorded images and mapping the sighted targets. <IMAGE></p> |
