PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device capable of suppressing the decrease of the aperture ratio of a conventional transverse electric field applying system type liquid crystal display device and reducing display defects such as afterimage and burning, and to provide its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: The width of a shading layer 11 can be narrowly formed and the numerical aperture can be enhanced by forming a color filter 10 and the shading layer 11 on an array substrate and the residue of charges can be suppressed and the display defects of the afterimage and burning can be suppressed by forming the color filter 10 on au upper layer of a common electrode 2 and a pixel electrode 5 to completely insulate the pixel electrode 5 and the common electrode 2 from a liquid crystal layer.
