According to a method for automatic speed adjustment in a vehicle, the distance and relative speed between the vehicle and an obstacle are determined and are used as a basis for calculating a braking torque or driving torque to be produced independently of the driver in order to align the actual speed of the vehicle with a calculated desired speed. The speed of the vehicle is adapted to the speed of the obstacle, while a maximum permissible limit speed may not be exceeded.
