Partly-crosslinked, water-soluble cellulose ethers (I), obtained by (a) contacting water-soluble cellulose ether(s) (II) with glyoxal and/or polyglyoxal (III) and (b) keeping the mixture for 12 hours or more at a temperature of at least 60 deg C. Independent claims are also included for: (i) a method as described above for the production of (I); (ii) water-soluble or -dispersible preparations containing (I) and at least one water-soluble or -dispersible polymer.
