PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeding mechanism adopting a separation method to use a retard roller, easy to handle and taking a smaller space. SOLUTION: A revolving bracket 7 to revolve around a fulcrum 9 as its center is provided on the side of a feed roller 3, and the retard roller 4 is provided on this revolving bracket 7 free to rotate. A gear part 10 is formed on the revolving bracket 7, and the gear part 10 is engaged with a gear 8. The gear 8 has a coaxial small gear 11, and the small gear 11 ia engaged with a lever gear 12. The lever gear 12 is installed on a fixed bracket 13 free to rotate around a support shaft 14 as its center and is constantly energized in the clockwise direction by a torsion spring 15 installed on the support shaft 14. An end part 12a of the lever gear 12 makes contact with an end part 16a of a sheet cassette 16. When the sheet cassette 16 is extracted out of a device 5, the lever gear 12 rotates, this rotation is transmitted to the revolving bracket 7, the revolving bracket 7 revolves and the retard roller 4 rises.
